When refugee status and gender intersect, barriers to employment don't simply stack up — they overlap. According to EIGE, refugee women in Europe are more likely to be unemployed or economically inactive than refugee men: two systems of inequality reinforcing one another. Care responsibilities tend to fall more heavily on women, eating into the time available for language courses, accreditation and the steps that lead to a job. And even with qualifications in hand, many are channelled into lower-paid sectors — domestic and care work in particular — where the risk of precarious or undeclared employment is higher. Looking at displacement through a gender lens reveals what would otherwise stay hidden. Support for refugees isn't built by one organisation alone. As part of HumanityHub, the Rehabilitation Centre for Stress and Trauma brought together 27 people from 16 organisations and institutions in Zagreb to look at how support for Ukrainian refugees in Croatia can grow. Civil society, public institutions, refugee services and members of the Ukrainian community sat around the same table — sharing experiences and identifying what already works and what still needs to change. По всій Європі багато біженців працюють на посадах, які вимагають значно менше знань і навичок, ніж вони здобули завдяки навчанню чи професійному досвіду. Інженери на складах, лікарі, що займаються доставкою - це поширена ситуація, яка має свою назву: декваліфікація. Декваліфікація - це не питання зусиль чи мотивації. Вона є наслідком незрозумілих процедур визнання кваліфікацій, мовного бар’єру, відсутності професійних зв’язків і правил ринку праці, які залишають мало простору для навичок, здобутих в інших країнах. Її наслідки відчувають усі - люди втрачають дохід і перспективи, а громади не отримують користі від внеску, який вони могли б зробити. Навички не зникають на кордоні. Across Europe, many refugees end up in roles that ask far less than what they've studied or done. Engineers in warehouses, teachers in cleaning roles — it's a familiar pattern, and it has a name: deskilling. Deskilling isn't a question of effort or motivation. It's the outcome of recognition procedures, language barriers, missing networks and labour-market rules that leave little space for skills earned elsewhere. The cost is shared — by individuals who lose income and prospects, and by communities that miss out on contributions they could have benefited from. Skills don't disappear at a border. As part of HumanityHub's psychosocial support programme, Ukrainian participants in Croatia practised Croatian where it matters most: in everyday situations. That included group lunches in Zagreb restaurants, where ordering food, talking about local dishes and sharing a meal became a way to build both language skills and a sense of belonging.
